The 1555 The Anabaptists

1555 AD

Mennonite leader Leenaert Bouwens ordered a woman in his congregation considered to be upright to shun her husband who had been banned from the congregation. This created a dispute about whether his actions were right. Simons sided with Bouwens, leading to a split in the movement with those who favored a more lenient interpretation of banning and shunning. This group was known as the Waterlanders.
