When the king arrived from Scotland to claim his new throne a delegation of Puritans met him at Hampton Court palace with a wish list of changes they wanted to see in the church. Added to these items was a request for a new English version of the Bible which would deal with problems in translation from previous versions.
The Bishop of Lond then added a qualification that no marginal notes be added to the Biblie such as had been the case with the Geneva Bible. The translators were also given instructions to limit Puritan influence on the translation.
Many of the other requests the Puritans made were summarily dismissed leading them to realise that they would gain no more under James I than they had under his predecessor.
